

Richard Greener was the first African-American professor at the University of South Carolina. Greener serving during the Reconstruction Era, from 1873 through 1877. In 2017 the University of South Carolina erected a memorial on the HIstoric Horseshoe to name, honor and memorialize the Enslaved African-Americans who built South Carolina College, founded in 1801 and the forerunner to the University of South Carolina. In February 2018, a statue of Ricard Greener was erected near the Thomas Cooper Library at USC, he stands as the first Librarian at USC at the current library.
